Description

Delight in these Strawberry Cream Cheese Breakfast Pastries made with flaky puff pastry, smooth cream cheese, and fresh strawberries. Perfectly golden with a sweet dusting of powdered sugar, these heart-shaped treats brighten up any morning with their blend of creamy and fruity flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 (8.6 oz) sheet puff pastry

Filling

  • 2 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp strawberry jam
  • 1 drop red food coloring (optional)
  • 2/3 cup very small diced strawberries

Egg Wash

  • 1 large egg whisked with 1 Tbsp water

Finishing

  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare Puff Pastry: Thaw puff pastry according to package directions. While thawing, preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Make Cream Cheese Mixture: In a small bowl, mix softened cream cheese, strawberry jam, and optional red food coloring with a rubber spatula until smooth and free of large lumps. Chill in the refrigerator until ready to use.
  3. Cut Pastry Shapes: Use a 3-inch heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out hearts from the puff pastry sheet, placing them close together to maximize the number of shapes obtained.
  4. Score Pastry Hearts: Transfer the cut hearts onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone liner, spacing them 1 1/2 inches apart. Lightly score a smaller heart inside each cut-out about 1/3-inch from the edge without cutting all the way through.
  5. Add Filling: Spoon 1 teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture onto the center of each heart and spread it outwards without covering the 1/3-inch edge. Layer diced strawberries on top, again without covering the edges.
  6. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the 1/3-inch border around each heart with the egg and water mixture to help seal and brown the edges during baking.
  7. Bake Pastries: Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and puffed.
  8. Cool and Serve: Remove from oven, let cool on a wire rack, then dust with powdered sugar. Serve the same day for best freshness and flavor.

Notes

  • For a quicker version, cut 6 rectangles instead of hearts and increase cream cheese to 3 oz, jam to 2 1/2 Tbsp, and strawberries to 1 cup for more surface coverage.
  • If the cream cheese mixture seems runny, flash chill it in the freezer briefly to firm up before using.
  • Use a silicone liner or parchment on the baking sheet to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  • These pastries are best enjoyed fresh the day they are made to maintain puffiness and flavor.
