Description

This easy and delicious Pigs in a Blanket recipe wraps juicy hot dog pieces and melty American cheese in buttery crescent roll dough, baked to golden perfection and brushed with a savory garlic-onion butter. Perfect as a fun appetizer or snack served with ketchup, mustard, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 4 hot dogs
  • 2 slices American cheese
  • 1 package crescent roll triangle dough
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

For Serving

  • Ketchup
  • Mustard
  • Maldon salt (or any flaked sea salt)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and line a medium baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the Crescent Dough: Take the package of crescent roll dough and keep it intact. Gently pull the dough into four rectangles by pinching the middle seams of the triangles together so the dough stays whole when cutting.
  3. Cut Dough Into Strips: Using a pizza cutter, slice each rectangle into three long strips approximately 3/4-inch wide by 4-inches long, resulting in twelve strips total.
  4. Cut Hot Dogs and Cheese: Slice each of the four hot dogs into thirds, yielding twelve pieces. Cut each slice of American cheese in half and then into thirds to make six small cheese pieces.
  5. Assemble Pigs in a Blanket: Optional: brush each dough strip lightly with Dijon mustard. Place one piece of cheese at the bottom of each dough strip, then put one hot dog piece on top. Roll the dough around the cheese and hot dog and place seam side down on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake Until Golden: Bake in the preheated oven for 12 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and the cheese has melted.
  7. Prepare Garlic Onion Butter: While baking, melt the salted butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir in the garlic powder and onion powder until combined.
  8. Brush and Season: When pigs in a blanket come out of the oven, brush them evenly with the garlic onion butter mixture and sprinkle with Maldon salt or another flaked sea salt for extra flavor.
  9. Serve: Serve warm with ketchup, mustard, or your preferred dipping sauces.

Notes

  • Using crescent roll dough makes wrapping the hot dogs quick and easy, but you can substitute with puff pastry if preferred.
  • Brush dough strips with mustard for a subtle tangy flavor, or omit if preferred.
  • Cut hot dogs and cheese evenly to ensure consistent baking and portion size.
  • For extra crispiness, bake a couple minutes longer watching closely to avoid burning.
  • These are best served fresh but can be reheated in a toaster oven or conventional oven for a few minutes.
  • Try swapping American cheese with cheddar or pepper jack for a flavor twist.
