Description

These Homemade Peppermint Patties are a festive and delicious holiday treat made with just five simple ingredients. Creamy peppermint-flavored filling is coated in rich, melted semi-sweet chocolate and topped with colorful Christmas sprinkles. Perfect for gifting or enjoying during the holiday season.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 3/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

Chocolate Coating

  • 3 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 teaspoons coconut oil or shortening

Topping

  • Christmas sprinkles (green, red, and white shapes)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In the bowl of a stand mixer or a large mixing bowl using an electric hand mixer, combine the sweetened condensed milk and peppermint extract. Gradually beat in the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, until a stiff dough forms that holds its shape well.
  2. Form and shape patties: Using a cookie scoop, portion the dough into 1-inch balls (about the size of a ping pong ball) and place them evenly spaced on a baking sheet lined with a non-stick mat or parchment paper. Gently press down each ball to flatten into patty shapes. Let the patties dry for two hours, flipping them once halfway through to ensure even drying.
  3. Melt the chocolate coating: When the drying time is nearly finished, place the semi-sweet chocolate chips and coconut oil (or shortening) in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir continuously as the chocolate melts to a smooth, glossy consistency, then remove from heat.
  4. Dip and decorate patties: Using a fork or dipping tool, fully coat each peppermint patty in the melted chocolate, ensuring complete coverage. Place the coated patties back onto the lined baking sheet to set. While the chocolate is still wet, gently press Christmas sprinkles on top of each for a festive finish.
  5. Set and serve: Allow the chocolate coating to fully harden at room temperature before serving or packaging. Store the peppermint patties in an airtight container for freshness.

Notes

  • If you prefer a stronger peppermint flavor, you can add an extra half teaspoon of peppermint extract.
  • For a smoother chocolate coating, avoid overheating the chocolate to prevent it from seizing.
  • Use a non-stick mat or parchment paper to make removal of patties easier after dipping.
  • Chocolate chips can be substituted with chocolate melting wafers if preferred for easier melting.
  • These patties can be stored at room temperature but keep them in a cool place to prevent melting during warmer months.
