Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 35-40 saltine crackers
Toffee
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
Topping
- 2 cups light green candy melts (about 1 12-ounce bag)
- red heart sprinkles
- green sprinkles of choice
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a 10 x 15-inch baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray it with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Arrange Crackers: Place 35-40 saltine crackers evenly in rows on the prepared baking sheet to cover the entire bottom surface. Set aside.
- Make Toffee: In a medium saucepan, melt 1 cup unsalted butter with 1 cup packed brown sugar over medium-high heat. Stir continuously until the sugar dissolves completely and the mixture comes to a boil. Let it boil for 3 minutes or until the temperature reaches between 270-290 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Pour Toffee: Pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the arranged saltine crackers. Use a heat-safe spatula to spread the toffee ensuring all crackers are covered.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 5 minutes to allow the toffee to bubble and set slightly.
- Add Candy Melts: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle 2 cups of light green candy melts evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let the candy melts sit for 2-3 minutes to melt completely.
- Spread Candy: Use a spatula to spread the melted candy melts evenly over the toffee surface.
- Decorate: While the candy is still warm, sprinkle red heart sprinkles and green sprinkles of choice evenly over the top.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the Christmas Crack to cool completely at room temperature until hardened. Once set, break into pieces and serve.
Notes
- Store the Christmas Crack in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 7 days.
- For longer storage, refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
- To freeze, place pieces in a freezer bag or airtight container layered with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Freeze for up to 3 months.
- Be careful when handling hot toffee mixture to avoid burns.
- You can substitute green candy melts with another color to customize the look.
