Description

A delicious and easy recipe for Grilled Italian Sausage and Peppers, featuring juicy sausages grilled to perfection, tender charred bell peppers and onions, topped with marinara sauce, melted mozzarella, and fresh basil served in warm buns.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausages and Buns

  • 4 mild or spicy Italian sausages
  • 4 buns or rolls of choice

Vegetables

  • 1 red bell pepper thinly sliced
  • 1 yellow bell pepper thinly sliced
  • 1 yellow onion thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Seasonings and Toppings

  • Salt & ground black pepper to season (about ½ teaspoon each)
  • ½ cup marinara sauce or your favorite store bought sauce
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh basil for garnish if desired

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill: Heat your grill to medium heat to prepare for cooking the sausages and vegetables.
  2. Prep the veggies: In a medium bowl, toss the sliced red and yellow bell peppers and onion with olive oil, ½ teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon ground black pepper. Set aside while you grill the sausages.
  3. Grill the sausage: Place the sausages directly on the grill grates and cook for 5-7 minutes per side until fully cooked through. Once done, transfer them to a plate and tent with foil to keep warm or place them over indirect heat on the grill to stay warm.
  4. Grill the veggies: Using a grill basket, place the seasoned peppers and onions over medium heat on the grill. Toss often and cook for 7-10 minutes until softened and nicely charred.
  5. Assemble the rolls: Place one sausage in each bun, then top with grilled peppers and onions, 2 tablespoons marinara sauce, and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.
  6. Melt the cheese: Place the assembled rolls on the grill over indirect medium-high heat for 1-2 minutes or under the oven broiler for 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted.
  7. Garnish and serve: Add fresh basil on top if desired, then serve the sandwiches warm for a tasty and satisfying meal.

Notes

  • Use spicy Italian sausages for extra heat or mild sausages for a gentler flavor.
  • If you don’t have a grill basket, use aluminum foil with holes poked for grilling the vegetables.
  • You can substitute marinara sauce with your favorite pasta sauce or salsa.
  • For a lower-fat option, use turkey Italian sausages and reduced-fat mozzarella.
  • To enhance flavor, marinate the sliced peppers and onion with olive oil and seasonings for 15 minutes before grilling.
  • If you prefer, cook the sausages and vegetables on a stovetop grill pan.
