Main Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter, or oil
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, preferably dutch processed
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (leave out if using salted butter)
- 1/2 cup favorite add-ins (chopped dark chocolate, chocolate chips, or walnuts)
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare the pan: Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease an 8x8 inch square pan or a 9x5 loaf pan, or line it with parchment paper or foil, then set aside.
- Melt butter and combine sugar and cocoa: In a large microwave-safe mixing bowl, add the butter and microwave for 1 minute or until completely melted. Add sugar and cocoa powder, then whisk vigorously for at least one minute until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
- Add eggs and vanilla: Add eggs one at a time followed by the vanilla extract. Whisk the mixture for at least one minute until fully combined and the batter looks shiny and smooth.
- Add flour and salt: Stir in the flour and salt until fully combined. Be careful not to overmix to ensure fudgy brownies.
- Fold in add-ins: Optionally, fold in your choice of 1/2 cup nuts, raisins, chocolate chips, or any preferred mix-ins.
- Bake the brownies: Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan. Bake for approximately 20 minutes or until the center is slightly set. Avoid over-baking to keep brownies moist and fudgy.
- Cool and slice: Let the brownies cool completely in the pan before cutting. Cut into 16 small squares or 9 large squares depending on preference.
Notes
- For extra gooey brownies, add 1 tablespoon of oil of choice along with the butter.
- Add 1 teaspoon of instant coffee or espresso powder to boost the chocolate flavor with an espresso twist.
- This recipe doubles well in a 9x13 or 9x9 pan; increase baking time by 5-7 minutes when doubled. Adjust servings to 32 accordingly.
- You can adjust the sugar between 3/4 cup and 1 1/4 cup according to your sweetness preference.
- Do not over-bake the brownies; baking for no more than 20-25 minutes keeps them moist and fudgy.
- Cut brownies as preferred: 16 small pieces or 9 larger servings.
