Description

Classic Christmas Sugar Cookies that are buttery, tender, and perfect for holiday decorating. These cookies bake to a perfect golden edge, making them ideal for festive shapes and icing.

Ingredients

Scale

Cookie Dough

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, measured correctly
  • 1 Tbsp aluminum-free baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350 °F and position a rack in the center of the oven for even baking.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a small bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Cream butter and sugar: Using a stand-up or handheld mixer, beat the softened butter together with the granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add egg and vanilla: To the creamed butter and sugar mixture, add the vanilla extract and the egg, then beat until fully combined.
  5. Incorporate dry ingredients: Gradually add the flour mixture in three parts to the wet mixture, mixing after each addition until fully incorporated into a soft dough.
  6. Roll out dough: Divide the dough into two equal portions. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion out to 1/4-inch thickness.
  7. Cut shapes: Use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out festive shapes from the rolled dough.
  8. Bake cookies: Place the cut cookies on a parchment or silicone-lined baking sheet and bake at 350 °F for 10 minutes, or until the edges begin to turn golden.
  9. Cool and decorate: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before decorating with icing.

Notes

  • For best results, measure flour properly by spooning it into the measuring cup and leveling off, avoiding packing it down.
  • Use aluminum-free baking powder to prevent any metallic taste in the cookies.
  • Ensure butter is softened but not melted to achieve a tender crumb.
  • Chill dough if too soft to handle when rolling out.
  • Decorate cooled cookies with your favorite icing or sprinkles for a festive touch.
