Description

This hearty Cheeseburger Pie combines the flavors of a classic cheeseburger in a comforting pie form, filled with savory beef, crispy bacon, melted cheddar cheese, and a soft, biscuit-like topping. Perfect for a satisfying main course, it’s topped with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles for extra burger authenticity.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Bacon

  • 6 slices bacon chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef 90% lean
  • 1/2 cup onion finely diced

Seasonings and Cheese

  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Batter

  • 1/2 cup baking mix such as Bisquick
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 eggs

Additional

  • cooking spray
  • assorted toppings such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and pickles

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly coat a 9-inch deep dish or 10-inch regular pie pan with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook Bacon: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the chopped bacon until crisp, about 4-5 minutes. Remove the bacon and place on a paper towel to drain excess grease, reserving 1 teaspoon of bacon grease in the pan.
  3. Cook Beef and Onions: Add the ground beef and diced onion to the skillet with the reserved bacon grease. Cook for 6-7 minutes, breaking the beef up with a spatula until browned and onions are soft.
  4. Season: Stir in salt, pepper, and garlic powder, cooking for another minute to blend flavors.
  5. Add Bacon to Meat: Return two-thirds of the cooked bacon to the skillet and mix well, reserving the remaining bacon for topping the finished pie.
  6. Assemble Pie Base: Transfer the meat mixture into the prepared pie pan, spreading evenly. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
  7. Prepare Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the baking mix, milk, and eggs until smooth.
  8. Pour Batter: Pour the batter evenly over the meat and cheese layer in the pie pan.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or until the pie is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Garnish and Serve: Remove the pie from the oven, top with the reserved bacon and your choice of burger toppings such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and pickles. Cut into wedges and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use 90% lean ground beef for great flavor without excess grease; if using fattier beef, drain excess grease before assembling the pie.
  • A 9-inch deep dish or 10-inch regular pie pan works best to hold all the batter and fillings; avoid standard 9-inch pie pans as they may be too small.
  • Freshly grated cheddar cheese melts better and provides more flavor than pre-shredded varieties.
  • You can customize the toppings according to your preferences with options like pickles, mustard, or ketchup to keep the cheeseburger theme.
